SUSANNE BINDER, MD

Susanne Binder received her MD from the Medical School of the University of Vienna. She did post-graduate training in vitreo-retinal surgery and research at Johns Hopkins University with Ron Michels, and with Robert Machemer at the Duke Eye Center.

Dr. Binder became Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Vienna Medical School in 1988. From 1995 to 2015 she was chairman at the Department of Ophthalmology at the Rudolf Foundation Clinic in Vienna and also chaired the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Retinology and Biomicroscopic Laser Surgery. Since 2012, she is Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medical School in New York. In 2017 Dr. Binder was appointed Professor of Special Ophthalmology at the Sigmund Freud University in Vienna.

Her scientific work is currently at the Karl Landsteiner Institute for Imaging and Retinal Research at the Rudolf Foundation in Vienna and at the Sigmund Freud University.

Professor Binder’s sub-speciality is vitreo-retinal diseases and microsurgery, research in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal regeneration treatments like cell transplantation and retinal implants and imaging, specifically developing a new Optical Coherence Tomography-integrated microscope together with Carl Zeiss Meditec/Oberkochen.

Dr. Binder has published more than 380 original peer reviewed articles in both English and German.   She was Editor-in-Chief of the Austrian Ophthalmic Journal, the “Spektrum für Augenheilkunde”. In addition, she was editor of 1 book “The Macula” and co-editor on 2 other books on Vitreoretinal Surgery and The Vitreous. She is also reviewer for international ophthalmic journals.

A member of many ophthalmic societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Retina Society, the Macula Society, the Club Jules Gonin and the Association of Retinal Specialists, Professor Binder was President of the Austrian Ophthalmic Society between 2004 and 2009 and currently serves as a member of the program committee for the German Ophthalmic Surgeons and the European Society of Ophthalmology. Professor Binder is honorary member of the Instituto Barraquer in Barcelona as well as the Austrian Ophthalmic Society, and has received the Senior Career Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2018.

Dr. Binder is a regularly invited speaker at many national and international meetings.  She had the honour of giving the Yasuo Tano Lecture at the Club Jules Gonin in 2014 as well as two prestigious at German Ophthalmic Surgeons (DOC) Conferences, the “Innovators Lecture” and the “Mayer-Schwickerath Lecture”.
